First, a reflection on the Goddard-Shell 10tet concert . . . on February 11: This exceptional concert focused on African-American composers in conjunction with Black History Month, and the ensemble, led by guitarist Ted Goddard, played many arrangements by Prince Shell, a longtime local musician and composer. Before many of the selections, including the classic "Sophisticated Lady," various band members provided background on the composers and their music. These sidebars were both interesting and informative compliments to the music. Those of you who were unable to attend this program missed an extraordinary performance.

The concert was beyond my expectations, which already were very high. You assembled a great 10tet, and the result was wonderful. You have provided a great service and musical gift to the jazz community, and thank you so much again. It was and is an ambitious project, and the result of your time and effort was very evident. People were buzzing about it during intermission and afterward.

I just want to say that I have enjoyed working with you over the past few years. Not only have you inspired me musically but your friendship has been so important.

Your band was great! It had moments when it really cooked and others when it was very lyrical and moving. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

[We] would like to express what a pleasure it was to have you provide the background music at our open house. Your guitar style and music selection was just the right touch and a perfect addition to our function! We received lots of compliments on your performance and professionalism.

We loved the music and so many people complimented us on our good taste! Some said they were so happy that they could enjoy the music but not have it so loud that they couldn't talk to each other. So many people commented on how happy they were that there was no disc jockey. I have heard that disc jockeys can cost as much as a whole band so why do people hire them? Live music is so much better!

Thank you for a tremendous job at our jazz series. Each of you are so skilled as musicians, and you come together beautifully as an ensemble. I was particularly impressed with the sophisticated music you tackle and play so well. I like the traditional approach and the daring solos. Thank you again.

Just a "note" of thanks for the wonderful music your band provided at our Medical Staff Meeting. They played lovely selections and arrangements that set the tone for a most pleasant evening.

The trio sounded wonderful last night and I could not have been more pleased. Thank you for being flexible with our changes and the seating arrangement. I would not hesitate to recommend you to others.

We enjoyed your work in Showboat but didn't get down to the pit to harass you. . . . you played your little picks off. Great job!

You made the evening spectacular. Thanks again for a great time. It was a joy and a wonderful experience to have your music in our home. I think even the walls were jumping to the rhythms and the tunes.
